Foo Fighters frontman David Grohl is serving up BBQ to California firefighters.

The wildfires currently raging across California are truly awful. But you know what’s not awful? Barbecue. And Foo Fighters frontman and San Fernando Valley native David Grohl is using his newfound love of barbecue to help California firefighters stay protein-loaded while they desperately combat ever-encroaching flames.

On Monday night, Grohl took his newly christened Backbeat BBQ to Fire Station 68 in Calabasas to serve up hot and ready brisket for hungry firefighters. The station later thanked Grohl, writing on their Instagram: "It was awesome to get a visit tonight from Dave Grohl of the @foofighters . He also treated us to some of his own @backbeatbbq . Thanks Dave! It was excellent!"

Grohl took to his own (or rather, Backbeat BBQ’s) Instagram to tell firefighters to simply “dig in.”

As it turns out, Grohl is a huge BBQ nut. He spoke to his latest obsession in an interview with GQ earlier this year, recounting how he’d often get “lost down a YouTube wormhole, watching videos on how to make the best spice rub for the perfect brisket.”

“When I get back to LA I’m taking a butchery course,” he said.

And then he did. According to Food and Wine, Grohl got his put master chops from fellow BBQ owner and friend chef Billy Terrell. Last September, he learned the tools of the trade by serving up customers from Terrell’s 28-foot trailer at a food truck event held at Studio City.

From there it wasn’t too much of a leap to serving firefighters saving the rest of California from going up in smoke.

Backbeat BBQ is a new venture for Grohl. According to their Instagram page, the earliest post was just last September. Serving Station 68 could very well be Backbeat’s first ever catering gig.

It just goes to show that when you’re a multi-millionaire rockstar, you can still learn something new and give back to your community.
