Good news if you are a fan of McDonald’s breakfast menu, but are looking to indulge your sweet tooth beyond that of Hotcakes. The fast-food chain is reportedly planning on adding a new tasty treat next month.
According to an internal report that was shared with Business Insider, McDonald’s will be adding "Donut Sticks" as a limited-time offering beginning in February.
As you may have already gathered, Donut Sticks will come in the form of deep-fried strips of sweetened dough. The sticks will be coated in cinnamon sugar and are expected to come in half-dozen and full-dozen packs.
The rumored addition follows comments made by McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook last year, when he expressed a “re-energized” focus on restaurant’s the breakfast menu.
In a response to Delish, the company stated:
“Our customers have been lovin’ the quality and iconic taste of McDonald’s breakfast for decades. In recent years, All Day Breakfast, more McCafé choices and new breakfast tastes, like our Triple Breakfast Stacks, are all proof of our renewed breakfast commitment. Expect more delicious and craveable news to come in 2019.”
Donut Sticks will be the first new menu item that McDonald’s has added in over a decade. The move likely comes as a direct response to Dunkin’ Donuts’ “Donut Fries,” which launched in June of last year and “quickly became one of the best-performing limited-time offer bakery items in recent brand history,” according to Dunkin' Brands CEO, David Hoffman.
How does Dunkin’ Donuts feel about McDonald’s copying them? In a statement made to Boston.com, the company expressed the following:
“We’re not surprised to see competitors imitate our success with Donut Fries given their popularity with customers, and we will continue to lead the way in introducing fun, unique, delicious items that bring smiles and keep people energized any time of day.”
Of course, even Dunkin’ isn’t necessarily original with stick-formed donuts (ever heard of a churro?). And let’s not forget the Cinnamon Twists that Taco Bell has served up for years. They may not exactly be the same as a” Donut,” but let’s not split hairs.
The interesting thing is that Donut Sticks are expected to only be available during McDonald’s breakfast hours, and not included in the popular all-day breakfast menu. Though the limited-time element of the product will probably add to its success, adding it to the all-day breakfast menu seems like it would be a no-brainer. It will be interesting to see how well McDonald’s new product fares, and whether or not it eventually becomes a permanent menu item.
