Beyond Meat has seen its stocks soar since they started trading publicly in 2019. The plant-based meat alternative company had their shares go from $25 to $155 right from the beginning. In stunning news in September 2019, McDonald's announced they would test market their own version of the Beyond Burger, the P.L.T, in 28 of their locations in Ontario, Canada.
Just like any burger, certain qualities make a Beyond Burger really great. Does it come on a vegan bun? Can it be topped with vegan toppings, and can it be ordered with no modifications? Read on to see a ranking of the best of Beyond Burgers.
10 Black Bear Diner
The Black Bear Diner doesn't try too hard to please plant-based customers. They don't offer vegan cheese, nor mayo, and the brioche bun it's served on isn't even vegan. But, if you ask for the vegan bun you can make it vegan, and with 130 locations in 13 states you have a good chance of finding a Black Bear Diner near you or while traveling.
Be aware that their burgers are cooked on a shared grill. This is standard practice at many establishments so if this is a problem for you, make sure you ask wherever you decide to visit.
Two varieties of Beyond Burger are available at BurgerFi and either can be ordered online from any of their 100 locations. Unfortunately, the toppings are pretty standard with no options for vegan cheese or mayo giving this restaurant the dubious honor of ninth place on our list. Vegans may be confused when ordered off their menu. While vegetarians can order the 100% Plant-Based Burger that comes with mayo and a choice of American, Swiss, or White Cheddar cheese, it's off-limits to those who include no dairy or eggs in their diet. Vegans will want to stick with the totally plant-based Vegan Beyond Burger.
8 Carl's Jr.
Carl's Jr. has been in business since 1941 and operates over 1500 restaurants. The Beyond Famous Star is the vegan version of their Famous Star burger and comes topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, dill pickle, special sauce, and mayonnaise.
The bun the Beyond Famous Star is served on contains no animal products but you will have to ask to have them hold the cheese, mayo, and special sauce if you're vegan. It does, however, score points for convenience as it's truly a fast food restaurant with a drive-thru for those late night cravings.
7 Twin Peaks
Twin Peaks is a sports bar and restaurant whose target demographic is men (think, Hooters) and claims to cater to a "Lodge Mantality". When you order an Imposter Burger at Twin Peaks you'll get a Beyond patty loaded with pepper jack cheese, arugula, tomato, pickles, sun-dried tomato mayo, caramelized onions, and creole mustard. Sounds delicious but, unfortunately for vegans it gets a low score.
There are no vegan cheeses nor mayo available so vegans will have to order the Imposter without cheese or mayo. Thankfully, the bun is vegan.
6 TGI Friday's
TGI Friday's was one of the first chain restaurants to add the Beyond Burger to their menu enabling vegans to enjoy a night out with omnivorous friends without worrying about finding something to eat.
Their bun is vegan but you will have to ask your server to hold the cheese and Friday's sauce. Tip: add a slice of avocado to top your burger to add a rich flavor without the cheese, or bring your own vegan mayo or cheese from home to top the burger when it arrives at your table.
5 Yard House
Let's hear it for the Yard House who tops their Beyond Burger with Follow Your Heart vegan mozzarella cheese! This loaded burger includes toppings like pickles, tomato, red onion, arugula, and smashed avocado and is served on a vegan onion roll.
Yard House is operated by Darden Restaurants and has 80 locations in the US, most of them west of the Mississippi. Their extensive menu also features a wide selection of meals made with Gardein vegan products giving you myriad ways to enjoy a delicious meat-free meal.
Bareburger, which operates 34 restaurants in the US with five more coming, replaced the elk and wild boar burgers on their menu with Beyond and Impossible burgers and their website says they are over one-third plant-based.
Bareburger's menu has three different varieties of Beyond Burger including one called the Wake Up Call which includes a plant-based egg. This variety and originality earns Bareburger a winner in all categories: the bun is vegan, they offer vegan cheese and mayo, and they have a variety of Beyond Burgers on their menu.
If you're in the Charlotte, North Carolina area, stop into one of the 25 locations of Showmars. This American-Greek fusion restaurant wins the award for originality for their take on the Beyond Burger. The Beyond Vegan Pita holds a Beyond Burger patty, hummus, lettuce, and onion turning an ordinary burger into a Greek favorite.
The standard Beyond Burger is also on the menu and is topped with tomato, lettuce, and chipotle mayo. Make sure you ask them to hold the chipotle mayo to make it vegan.
2 Next Level Burger
When it comes to giving vegans everything they crave, Next Level Burger has it all. You won't have to worry about cross-contamination or shared fryers here – Next Level is a 100% plant-based eatery and wins the prize for #2 Beyond Burger. Go crazy topping your Beyond patty with cheese, mayo, special sauce, or even bacon – it's all vegan!
Next Level also serves Beyond Brats, Beyond Meat's answer to traditional bratwurst, stuffed with vegan versions of cheese, chili, and sour cream. The only bad news is that, at this time, there are only seven locations in the US.
1 Veggie Grill
And the winner is....Veggie Grill! This all-vegan chain restaurant operates in 29 locations in 4 states and won VegNews magazine's Favorite Vegan Chain Award three years in a row. They have two ways to enjoy your Beyond Burger such as their patty melt with Swiss cheese, and caramelized onions on grilled rye bread. Or, treat yourself to a Beyond Burger Cheesesteak Sandwich loaded with onions, green peppers, and Provolone cheese.
What makes Veggie Grill our #1 choice? It's 100% vegan which means no modifications are needed while ordering, plus you'll enjoy a large variety of options. Choco-Churro Sundae, anyone?
