Pokémon fans finally have a café in Japan dedicated to the franchise that’s not a pop-up shop. In the past, there were a lot of Pokémon-themed cafés available, but they were usually of limited time because they were used as promotion for new games. With a permanent store, Pokémon fans can enjoy their Pikachu lattés any time of the year.
Pokémon is a huge franchise not only in Japan, but around the world. In 2018, Pokémon Go reached over 800 million downloads across the globe. While merchandise is available worldwide, Japan has become the expert in creating cute, stunning, and creative Pokémon-themed things. After all, they were the ones who created the widely-loved franchise. With the opening of a permanent café, Pokémon can sell not only exclusive merchandise, but also the experience of eating delicious Pokémon-themed food.
The café is located in Nihonbashi on the 5th floor of the Takashimaya department store—right next to the Pokémon Center Tokyo DX. The interior is bright, simple, and of course, decorated with various pocket monsters. The décor isn’t crazy, which makes the café vibe still elegant even though there’s cute Pokémon everywhere you turn. All the food available in the café are made with the theme or to the likeness of a particular Pokémon. Diners can enjoy an Eevee latté, a Gengar smoothie, a Jigglypuff cheesecake, or a Pikachu burger—just to name a few.
You have to reserve a table in order to eat there, so Pokémon fans better book quickly! Reservations are divided into two groups: regular and special. Regular customers can book for free and each person in their party is required to order at least one thing on the menu. Special reservations allow the customer to pre-order certain products that are not regularly available at the café.
The Pokémon café has only been open for less than a year, yet it has been quite successful. Seats are highly sought-after at the café, and a table could only become available weeks in advance. Everyone wants a taste of the very best atmosphere, so it’s no wonder the café is always fully booked.
