IKEA has introduced salmon balls as its newest addition to the popular (m)eatball menu. This addition contributes to the company's goal to offer healthier and sustainable food.
There was actually a time when the last thing on your mind when shopping for furniture, was a decent meal. Back in the day, shopping for tables and chairs simply meant you needed that new item to finally complete the room you were working on and making over or the sheets you just had to have for that new bed in the Guest Room. Indeed, interior decorating was all you had time to think about before IKEA and their in-store Café or Restaurant made the scene and became a thing.
As it turns out, IKEA Restaurants have indeed risen in popularity, and so much so, that people are flocking to the locations for a meal, rather than the need for actual items that they can find in their stores!
And some recent buzz about the addition of a new food item on the menu has certainly gotten many to talk about the IKEA Café once again. Yes, people are in fact buzzing about the tasty new morsel in the form of Italy’s greatest invention. And no, it’s not pizza or even pasta, but rather the latter's long-lost cousin, the meatball, only with a twist, of course.
So what’s the secret new ingredient that has millions buzzing? Seafood … and not just any old seafood mind you, but fresh salmon of all things.
Actually, IKEA has been serving food at their outlets for many years, specifically since 1956, the founder, Ingvar Kamprad, believed that it wasn’t good for families to shop on an empty stomach. And we’d have to agree with him, the sage. After all, how often have you been shopping when all of a sudden your stomach starts rumbling in need of nourishment? If you said too often, then IKEA's the place for you.
The meatball in general — specifically their Swedish meatball — is quite a famed menu item that can be found at their locations. It had its rise in the eighties, and customers have yet to look back, as the IKEA Meatball is an item of food you simply have to try. This is probably why the new Salmon Meatballs have made such a commotion, as IKEA is extending their Meatball brand to include a much healthier and for some, a much tastier meatball to the menu.
The meatball will contain ASC-Certified Salmon (as well as some fresh Cod meat) and will be seasoned with fresh seaweed and lemongrass, making it an example of the fresh cuisine the Nordic homeland has to offer. IKEA also believes that the addition will be favorable to some vegetarians and is a healthier option as a whole to health buffs out there.
In a statement made by representatives, they said: “A first test in IKEA Restaurants in Portugal shows very positive results: over 80% of restaurant guests that tried the new salmon balls liked them and almost 90% of customers asked in this survey appreciated the salmon balls as a more sustainable option.”
Although a food item needs to be tested before it can be criticized, many believe that the world is in for a treat here, as the proof is in past performances and the food that the restaurant has already delivered.
Personally … we’d say, “Go for it.”
